Kumaon is believed to have been derived from "Kurmanchal", meaning land of the Kurmavatar, i.e the tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It consists of higher ranges of hills descending towards south, being succeeded by a narrow stretch of low broken country called the Bhabar and then by a gradual slope towards the great plain of Upper India, which is called the Terai.
Kumaon or Kumaun is one of the two divisions of state of Uttarakhand India and Kumaon has its own distinct and impressive tradition, festivals, food and culture. Headquarter of Kumaon division and the High Court of Uttarakhand is located in Nainital. Haldwani (District Nainital) is the like the entrance door to Kumaon region, Uttarakhand India.
Haldwani is located at a key location and has a Railway station, Bus station & Taxi stand. Kathgodam which also has a Railway station, is North of Haldwani, 8 km away and is part of the twin township of Haldwani-Kathgodam. Pant Nagar airport is in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand & is the nearest airport to Nainital while Jolly Grant is the nearest airport to Mussoorie. Pithoragarh Airport, also known as Naini Saini Airport is in Pithoragarh of Kumaon region, Uttarakhand. The airport was constructed for administrative use and recently the commercial services to Dehradun and Pantnagar have been started.
Jolly Grant Airport serves as the primary airport for Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mussoorie, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath and Gangotri.
It is located on the Badrinath Highway, Chamoli, Uttarakhand and has a stunning airstrip. It played a important role during the rescue of pilgrims from the Kedarnath Floods in 2013. Its fully operational under the Indian Army but it is not open for common flights.
It is the only airport in Kumaon and is important for Uttarakhand Tourism as its closest airport to popular Uttarakhand Destinations like Nainital, Ranikhet, Bhimtal and Almora.
Chinyalisaur Airport also known as Maa Ganga Airport currently serves the Indian Air Force. It was initially constructed to cater to the needs of tourist, pilgrim traffic but lay unused.
