Ranikhet the beautiful hamlet in Kumaun region, state of Uttarakhand, India got its name when, Rani Padmini, queen of Raja Sukherdev, the local ruler, saw this place and was so captivated that she decided to stay there, and the place came to be known as Ranikhet (literally, queen's field). The picturesque hill station was rediscovered by the British and established a cantonment in 1869. Ranikhet is still a cantonment town and is the Kumaun Regimental Centre.
The breath-taking view of the Himalayan ranges and the natural scenic beauty draws in large number of tourists from all over the world every year. The floras, which are found commonly in this place, include pine, oak and deodar. The wild lives, which are sheltered in the forested areas of Ranikhet, are wild bear, leopard, Indian hare, red fox, leopard cat, barking deer, sambhar, pine mertin, mountain goat, red faced monkey, jackal, langur and porcupine.
Ranikhet also boasts of one of the best hill golf greens (9 holes) in the country.

Railway Station: The nearest railway station is Kathgodam. Haldwani & Kathgodam are adjacent to each other, Haldwani is like the entrance door to Kumaun and Haldwani/Kathgodam are well connected by trains from Delhi (Shatabdi runs daily), Lucknow, Dehradun, Jaipur, Howrah (Kolkata).
