The Naini Lake is one of the 64 Shakti Peeths, the spot where Sati’s Nain(eyes) fell, came to be called Nainital.

  • The hill station town of Nainital,Uttarakhand was founded in 1841, with the construction of the first European house (Pilgrim Lodge) by P. Barron.In September 1880, a landslide (the Landslip of 1880) occurred followed by heavy rainfall, which naturally brought down streams of water from the hill side. To prevent further disasters, storm water drains were constructed and a recreation area known as The Flats were later built on the site and a new temple was also erected.

  • Kainchi Dham ( Neem karoli baba ) : 18km/40 min from Nainital , Kainchi is a beautiful secluded mountain ashram located in the Kumaun Hills in Uttarakand. Temple is devoted to Lord Hanuman adjacent to it is the Kainchi Temple and an Ashram built for devotees. The Pran-Pratishtha of idols of Hanumanji and others was performed on 15th June in different years. Thus, 15th June is celebrated every year as Pratishtha Divas when many devotees come to Kainchi and get Prasad .   

  • Mukteshwar : 47 kms/100 mins from Nainital. Mukteshwar is a small hill town at an altitude of 7500 feet, it derives its name from a 350-year-old temple of Lord Shiva, known as Mukteshwar Dham. Close to it are overhanging cliffs, locally known as Chauli-ki-Jali where you can indulge in adventure sports like rock climbing, rappelling etc. are done. You get the amazing view of Himalayan ranges from here. Noted Nobel winner scientist Robert Koch and Jim Corbett too visited Mukteshwar .   

  • Ramgarh : 35km/80 mins from Nainital, and is well connected by motorable road. Ramgarh is known as “Fruit bowl of kumaun” and for a variety of Himalayan fruits and spectacular views of the Himalayan ranges.The famous poet Rabindra Nath Tagore & Writer Mahadevi Verma spent a long time in Ramgarh to compose their poems and have praised the serenity of this place. Aurobindo Ashram is another place worth visiting at Ramgarh.

  • Jim Corbett National Park : 64 kms/110 mins from Nainital and is spread over an area of 521 Sq. Kms. Jim Corbett Park spreads over parts of two districts , a major part of park falls in Pauri Garhwal district and the balance in Nainital district . Savannah woodland ,bamboo brakes dry deciduous forests and Sissu-Khair forests provide as variety of vegetation and consequently habitats for different species of wild life. The forests in the park mainly consists of Shisham,Sal & Chir. The park is rich in wild life such as elephant ,tiger ,panther ,bear ,dear ,pig,jungle cats, porcupine ,hyena ,and jackal. Amongst the birds are the pea fowl,the jungle fowl ,grey and black partridge,pigeons,quails ,kingfisher ,kite ,lark and the woodpecker. The Ramganga is full of mahaseer fishes. Among the reptiles are python,crocodile and many species of lizards and snakes. Tigers are fairly well distributed over the park and inhabit the large number of nalas , ravines and open glades.
